The land that became Sweetwater was first noted in a document in 1817. The oldest standing house in Sweetwater, the Biggs house, was built in 1820. In 1850, Issac Lenoir began selling lots to establish the town. Sweetwater continued to grow and was deemed The City of Sweetwater in Monroe County on December 8th, 1875.
Back in 1880, Sweetwater had a population of 677. Sweetwater has nearly 10x that now at 6,312!
